NHS Certified: How the iCare DRSplus is Reshaping Diabetic Eye Screening

07 May 2025

In April, we announced that the iCare DRSplus Confocal Fundus Imaging System has officially received NHS approval for use in diabetic eye screening (DES)! This is a significant milestone, not just for iCare, but for diabetic patient care across the UK. With mounting pressure from the UK government to improve NHS waiting times and eliminate backlogs, it’s now more important than ever that we refocus efforts on speed, accuracy and efficiency when it comes to diagnostics.  In this blog, we’ll delve in a little more detail, touching on exactly what this certification means in both public and private healthcare settings.  Designed for Prevention, Built for Speed The iCare DRSplus isn’t just a camera – it’s a next-generation diagnostic platform designed to help clinicians act earlier, faster, and with greater confidence. Its rapid workflow and remote review capabilities help move diabetic care from reactive to preventative. That’s crucial at a time when diabetes rates are rising, and broader public health campaigns are shining a spotlight on long-term disease management. Speed is a critical factor in any busy clinical setting. The DRSplus features a fully automated, “walk-up-and-scan” workflow. From alignment to image capture, the system requires minimal user input and no specialised training – reducing the workload on clinical teams while maintaining consistency in image quality.  The system also includes an integrated Mosaic function, which automatically stitches together multiple images to create an 80° panoramic view of the retina, offering a broader perspective without requiring additional input from the operator. This wide-field view can aid in early detection of peripheral abnormalities and offers more complete documentation of retinal health over time. https://www.main-line.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/DRSplus-retina-3-scaled.jpg In addition, the DRSplus offers:
  • Remote viewer access – Enabling images to be reviewed instantly from any workstation on the local network – ideal for hospitals and screening programmes looking to streamline referral and triage processes.
  • Flexible integration – The system can be configured to store and transfer data via DICOM or other standard protocols, supporting compatibility with hospital PACS and EHR systems.
  • Minimal maintenance – With no moving parts in the optical pathway and LED illumination designed for longevity, the DRSplus is a low-maintenance solution built for high-volume environments.
In essence, the DRSplus transforms diabetic eye screening from a time-consuming, resource-heavy task into a streamlined, patient-friendly process, empowering clinicians to move from reactive care to proactive intervention. It’s a tool not just for today’s NHS, but for the future of ophthalmic care delivery. A First in its Class Until recently, only traditional fundus cameras had been approved for DES. Following a rigorous review process, the iCare DRSplus has been certified, and is now the first confocal retinal imaging system to be certified for use in the national screening programme.  Why does this matter? Because confocal technology enables higher-resolution imaging through smaller pupils and even mild media opacities, such as cataracts. In fact, recent studies show confocal systems like the DRSplus may detect early signs of disease that standard fundus cameras can miss. With this certification, healthcare professionals can now take advantage of this superior technology to support faster, more accurate diagnoses. Not only this, but the DRSplus can do anything a traditional fundus camera can, making it an incredibly versatile addition to any ophthalmologist’s toolkit.  Supporting NHS Efficiency Goals The iCare DRSplus comes, as standard, with a fully automated imaging process, designed to be easy to use by any users. Nurses and screeners can quickly and efficiently capture detailed retinal images in under a minute, requiring minimal training and no specialist input. In practice, that means quicker appointments, reduced bottlenecks, and a more streamlined patient pathway from screening to referral. Hospitals, such as Yeovil District Hospital are screening patients quicker than ever, here’s how:
  • The DRSplus has been installed in the emergency department to streamline patient referrals into Ophthalmology.
  • Emergency staff with little experience in retinal imaging can capture what they need quickly and easily.
  • Patient IDs are then passed onto the eye HES (hospital eye service) triage team, who remotely access images and decide whether the patient needs to be seen by Ophthalmology.
They’re reviewing images remotely and fast tracking those who need urgent care, all thanks to the DRSplus.  In a time where efficiency is more important than ever before, the DRSplus is doing its small part to cut down on wait times and make the NHS experience that little bit more seamless.  In essence, the DRSplus transforms diabetic eye screening from a time-consuming, resource-heavy task into a streamlined, patient-friendly process, empowering clinicians to move from reactive care to proactive intervention. Blurred vision means lost hours and arranging alternative transport, turning a simple appointment into a major inconvenience. Unfortunately, this is leading to diabetes going undiagnosed, patients suffering more than necessary, and increased long-term costs for the NHS.  The iCare DRSplus removes the need for dilation, imaging through pupils as small as 2.5mm. While Scotland already uses this approach, dilation is still often required in England. No dilation means higher attendance, faster screening, and greater appeal — especially for younger adults. Early diagnosis is vital, and the DRSplus helps make it possible. NHS Certification – More Than Meets the Eye Perhaps it goes without saying, but NHS certification is a huge step in the right direction, both when it comes to diabetic eye screening, but also for furthering treatment of other common conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma.
