Why High-Street Optometrists are Investing In Pentacam Technology

30 Sep 2025

In a busy practice, time is everything. Pentacam makes things simple, capturing up to 25 Scheimpflug images in one go (without requiring patients to move their eyes), building a motion-corrected, full 3D model of the anterior eye. The Fast Screening Report then distils all crucial metrics (curvature, thickness, elevation) into a single, easy-to-read summary for quick, evidence-based decisions. From keratoconus staging and pachymetry to glaucoma risk assessment, you get an instant overview that supports quicker, more confident decisions.  With reports that compare results against normative data, Pentacam gives you clear, evidence-based answers at speed, helping keep clinics flowing while delivering the service and precision your patients demand.

What is Pentacam?

Pentacam is an advanced anterior segment imaging system that provides a comprehensive three-dimensional analysis of the anterior eye.  Using a rotating Scheimpflug camera system, the device captures thousands of data points across the cornea, while a pupil camera simultaneously monitors and tracks eye movements, ensuring precise alignment and reproducibility. Even in its base configuration, Pentacam offers an extensive suite of diagnostic tools. For practices requiring additional capability, optional software modules can be added, allowing the system to grow with clinical needs. https://www.main-line.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/unnamed-1.gifhttps://www.main-line.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/unnamed-2.gifhttps://www.main-line.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/unnamed-3.gifhttps://www.main-line.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/unnamed-4.gif

Improving the early diagnosis of keratoconus

Changes in the posterior cornea are often the earliest indicators of keratoconus. Pentacam’s BAD display, pachymetric indicators, and volumetric thickness maps give you the ability to detect these changes early and confidently. That capability means timely referral for cross-linking (CXL), slowing disease progression and dramatically reducing the chance of keratoplasty down the line.

The importance of diagnosing keratoconus early

A recent 2025 study reported that 60% of participants with keratoconus were unaware of their condition until tomographic testing was performed. This is why high street optometrists are embracing the Pentacam en masse.  It allows you to look at the back of the cornea, where the earliest signs of keratoconus appear. Pentacam can pick up changes that would be missed on a slit lamp or keratometer. This allows you to track progression earlier and refer patients for treatment at the right time. The impact is significant:
  • Slowing or stopping progression – If caught early, patients can be referred for corneal cross-linking (CXL), which helps stabilise the cornea before vision is seriously affected.
  • Fewer transplants needed – Without early detection, keratoconus can progress to a stage where corneal transplantation is the only option. Pentacam gives you the chance to intervene before that point.
For patients, that could mean avoiding life-changing surgery. For practices, it positions you as offering hospital-level detection on the high street (something that most big opticians cannot offer).

Bespoke contact lens fitting

Pentacam also integrates with advanced lens-fitting software, enabling highly customised scleral and corneal contact lens design.  It allows you to model the corneal and scleral profile in three dimensions. This means your practice can deliver personalised, comfortable lens fits that chains simply can’t do – you can become your neighbourhood’s contact lens expert!

Tomography – looking at the whole picture

Pentacam offers so much more than topography. Pentacam tomography reviews both surfaces of the cornea and the full thickness profile, giving you a volumetric readout that improves accuracy for ectasia screening, pre-op planning, and refractive risk assessment.

Benefits for both patients and practices

High-street practices adopting Pentacam technology gain a clear dual advantage: For patients:
  • Faster and more accurate diagnostic pathways
  • Early detection of keratoconus and ectatic disorders
  • Bespoke contact lens solutions that are far more comfortable
  • Comprehensive and reliable anterior segment assessment
For practices:
  • A single platform delivering multi-parameter diagnostics
  • Access to full tomography
  • Differentiation in a competitive high-street market
  • Improved patient trust and retention through advanced care
By adopting Pentacam, practices are not merely upgrading equipment; they are future-proofing their diagnostic capability and reinforcing their role as trusted providers of specialist anterior segment care.

Raising the standard in anterior segment diagnostics

From routine anterior segment screening to early keratoconus detection and customised lens fitting, Pentacam establishes a new benchmark in diagnostic precision for optometrists. You’re not just investing in a machine, you’re investing in an upgraded clinical service that combines speed and precision. A key differentiator for your practice.  Seeing this technology in action is often more compelling than reading about it.
