What Does a Slit Lamp Help With?
Slit lamps are an essential tool in eye examination, both at a routine and advanced level. They allow optometrists and ophthalmologists to closely inspect the cornea, anterior chamber, iris and lens, and also support posterior chamber assessment when used with appropriate auxiliary lenses. They help with identifying and monitoring conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, corneal disease, ocular surface disorders and retinal abnormalities.
By providing controlled illumination and adjustable magnification, slit lamps support accurate diagnosis, documentation and treatment planning, helping clinicians confidently assess eye health. They can be used with additional image capture technology to display and save results to a PC.
Frequently Asked Questions
A slit lamp is a specialised ophthalmic microscope used by optometrists and ophthalmologists to examine the anterior and posterior chambers of the eye under high magnification. They combine focused illumination with adjustable optics and specific filters to deliver a stereoscopic image, allowing a detailed assessment of the cornea, iris, lens and other ocular structures.
